NATO "at risk" over Afghanistan/ d.welle

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband have paid a surprise visit to Kandahar province during an unscheduled visit to Afghanistan. Rice told reporters that she hoped certain NATO members and Afghanistan will contribute more troops to support the fight against Taliban insurgents in the dangerous south of the country. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates earlier said the future of NATO was at risk unless member nations share the burden of tackling the insurgency. This topic is also expected to dominate a two-day meetings of NATO defence ministers in Lithuania over the next two days. Germany has 3,000 troops based in the north of Afghanistan. Berlin has agreed to send a rapid reaction force of 250 combat soldiers to replace a Norwegian contingent that is leaving this summer.
