Turkish PM: Turkey has strategic role in world

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has opened the 44th Munich Conference on Security Policy by emphasising the strategic role of Turkey in the world. He said that developments since the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001 also affect his country, and warned of a globalisation of terrorism. Erdogan referred to the ongoing fight against Kurdish separatists in northern Iraq. But the Turkish premier said his county had no aspirations to conquer Iraqi territory. He also repeated Turkey's desire to join the European Union, saying accession to the bloc would send a positive signal to the Muslim world. Politicians and security experts from around the world are attending the two-day conference in the southern German city.
