France signs 10 billion euros worth of deals with Libya

France and Libya have signed contracts worth around 10 billion euros on the first day of a visit to Paris by the Libyan leader, Colonel Moammar Gadhafi. A statement released by French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said the deals included the sale of 21 Airbus planes and a co-operation agreement on the civilian use of nuclear energy. Sarkozy is the first Western leader to host talks with Gadhafi since he pledged four years ago to renounce terrorism and give up the pursuit of nuclear weapons. Until then, Libya had been isolated by the international community for decades. Human rights groups and the French human rights minister, Rama Yade, have criticised Gadhafi's visit, which started on the United Nations-designated Human Rights Day.
