The president says up to 50,000 troops could stay in Iraq for limited missions in training and combating terrorism, but that he intends to remove all troops from Iraq by the end of 2011.   Mr. Obama said that Iraq is not yet secure and that difficult days lie ahead, but he said the United States must refocus on other priorities, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. | 27.02.2009 | 12:00 UTC EU envoy visits Gaza to assess extent of devastation European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is on a visit to the war-torn Gaza Strip. He's the highest ranking European official to visit the territory since the Islamist Hamas seized power in the Palestinian territory in June 2007. The visit comes ahead of an international conference on rebuilding Gaza which is set to begin in Cairo on Monday. DW

Opinion | 25.02.2009 Opinion: Obama Shows Confidence in Face of Gloomy Times Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: In his first important speech to Congress, President Barrack Obama didn't sugarcoat the situation, but added he was confidant that the country would pull itself up again, say Deutsche Welle's Christina Bergmann. Barack Obama didn't really have anything new to say in his speech, but that wasn't necessary. After just five weeks in office, his administration has accomplished amazing things: they've passed an almost $800 billion (628 billion euro) stimulus package, got the ball rolling on help for families forced to sell their homes and for banks that have gone into a tailspin, sent special envoys to the world's trouble spots and ordered the closing of Guantanamo. No one should seriously expect these measures to have an immediate effect. The USA is like a supertanker: the new captain on board can order a new course, but such a l

Engine failure clue in jet crash The plane crashed short of the runway where it had been due to land Engine failure may have been a factor in Wednesday's crash of a Turkish Airlines plane at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, the chief investigator says. Pieter van Vollenhoven told Dutch state television that the way the aircraft fell directly from the sky suggested that its engines might have stalled. Nine people were killed when the Boeing 737-800 crashed short of the runway. A Dutch official said those killed were five Turks and four Americans. Six people remain in a critical condition. Eighty-six people were injured altogether. Mr Van Vollenhoven, chairman of the Dutch Safety Board, said a reason for the apparent engine failure had not yet been established.   That so many people were able to walk out was truly remarkable   Fred Sanders Dutch Safety Board Making plane crashes less deadly "If you then lose speed, you then literally fall out of the sky," he was quoted as
