Palestinian factions agree on unity government
The rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas say they have agreed to set up a new unity government by the end of March. The agreement was announced amid Egyptian-sponsored reconciliation talks in Cairo. Former Fatah Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei told a press conference that a series of committees would meet next month to resolve differences over how to form a new government, reform security agencies, and hold elections. Egypt has mediated between the rival Islamic and secular movements since a Hamas-led unity government disintegrated in factional fighting in June 2007, leaving Hamas in control of Gaza and Fatah in control of the West Bank.
