With another three million migrants and refugees expected in 2016, the mass migration has raised questions about the future of Europe and the ability of its countries to absorb the migrants both culturally and economically. Migrants had been pouring into Europe for months, but images of a drowned three-year-old Syrian boy on a Turkish beach in September shocked the world

WEATHER Can we blame this crazy weather on El Niño?

WEATHER Can we blame this crazy weather on El Niño? Floods in South America and England, spring temperatures in Europe, tornadoes in the US - of all these weather phenomena, only the ones in the southern hemisphere can be linked to El Niño. Parts of England are  flooded  after torrential rainfall, and also in southern America more than 150.000 people had to leave their homes after floods. In the US, a  tornado  claims 43 lives, and in Ethiopia people are starving as a result of a draught. At the same time, we are expecting  unusually mild temperatures  at the North Pole - just above the freezing point. This is about 40 degrees warmer than usual at this time of year and - at least during the day - almost as warm as southern California in the middle of the night. There, temperatures dropped to as low as 4 degrees Celsius (the low 50s Fahrenheit) just recently. Looks like the weather has gone nuts? Be that as it may, when looking for a scapegoat, the usual suspect El Niño

Opinion: 2015 was a horrible year

Image
GLOBAL CONFLICTS Opinion: 2015 was a horrible year The headlines that have dominated the news this year have made for unhappy reading. There's been no historic moment of change, but the world has definitely become messier, says DW's editor-in-chief Alexander Kudascheff. 2015 was a horrible and depressing year. It was a year of crises, of war and of catastrophes. It was a year of things starting to unravel, of shows of force and of monstrous terror from Paris to Beirut to Bamako. And it was a year of change, as well as political and societal upheaval. But has it marked the end of an era? A historic turning point? In 1989, the American historian Francis Fukuyama predicted that history was ending: that humanity had reached the endpoint of its ecological evolution. He was certain, after the implosion of the main communist nations, that the liberal Western view of democracy would triumph. A quarter of a century later, we can confidently say that this was the wrong pr

MIDDLE EAST Syrian rebel leader Zahran Allouch reportedly killed in airstrike

MIDDLE EAST Syrian rebel leader Zahran Allouch reportedly killed in airstrike The head of the most powerful insurgent group in the eastern suburbs of Syrian capital Damascus was killed in an air raid targeting the group's headquarters. Both rebel sources and the Syrian army confirmed the event. The death of Zahran Allouch, head of the Jaysh al-Islam rebel (Army of Islam) movement, was confirmed on Twitter by Syria's opposition National Coalition, who posted a message of condolence. Jaysh al-Islam is the largest rebel faction in the capital and is said to have between 15,000 to 20,000 fighters. It is also one of the rebel groups that will be negotiating with Assad's government in Geneva next year. It remained unclear which country had ordered the air strikes. The Syrian Army took credit for the attack and said in a statement that its planes had carried out a "special aerial operation" in eastern Ghotta, which led to the killing of "terrorist Zahr

Angela Merkel calls for solidarity in New Year speech

POLITICS Angela Merkel calls for solidarity in New Year speech Germany's chancellor calls the influx and integration of refugees "tomorrow's opportunity" in her New Year's address. The euro crisis fails to garner a mention, but next year's European Football Championship does. With an eye to the refugee crisis, Chancellor Angela Merkel explains that one thing more than any will be important for Germany in 2016: "Our solidarity." In her New Year's address she says, "It is important that we not let ourselves be divided. Not into generations, not into social groups, and not into those that are already here and those that are new citizens." People should not follow "those with coldness, or even hate in their hearts, and who claim the right to be called German for themselves alone and seek to marginalize others," demands Merkel, without mentioning Pegida, the organization which roughly translates to "Patriotic E
