US criticises Moscow over arms move
The United States has urged Russia to change its mind after it suspended its participation in a key treaty limiting armed forces in Europe on Wednesday. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called the decision wrong, and said it would damage arms control. Russia suspended its compliance with the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty as of midnight on December 12. The move was prompted in part by NATO's demand that Russia withdraw troops from breakaway regions in the former Soviet states of Georgia and Moldova. Russia has also been angered by US plans to install a missile-defence system in Poland and the Czech republic.
