US denies approving Turkish airstrike on northern Iraq
The United States has denied that it approved a Turkish air-strike on Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, saying, however, that they were informed before the event. The comments came after a Turkish General was quoted as saying that Washington had opened Iraqi airspace to the Turks, which signalled tacit US approval of the operation. The cross-border attacks were aimed at suspected bases of the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK); they left at least one person dead. The Turkish army currently has up to 100,000 troops near the Iraqi border.
