Putting the chaos in order

Putting the chaos in order

A major effort is under way to streamline Greece’s broader state sector. Hopefully the work being done will eventually lead to results.
We should not forget that, until very recently, officials at the top echelons of power had no idea of the exact number of employees working at every one of the state sectors or how much they cost the budget. Even calculating the number of state organizations requires a bit of guesswork.
Now the government is trying to put the chaos in order. As a result, several state organizations are naturally concerned that their existence will come into question. The streamlining process will not be easy because no minister wants to see agencies and organizations in their area of jurisdiction go. As a result, they are reluctant to come up with the required data.
However, this is the only way forward for any state that respects itself and the money being paid out by taxpayers.
