The World Today
From the editor of the World Today, Alastair Elphick:
It has been a busy few weeks on the programme, what with the global economic crisis, the coverage of the US presidential election and reporting the dramatic events in eastern DR Congo- as well as our own trip to west Africa.
The World Today team both at Bush House and in Washington enjoyed working on the night that Barack Obama was elected President - bringing the results from America and reactions from around the world.
And we are already planning the coverage for his inauguration on January 20th - we're expecting the event will turn Washington into a venue for a very big street party.
Earlier this month, one of the World Today presenters, Komla Dumor, travelled to Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana, to examine the state of democracy in the region.
You can find out more about his journey by clicking here.
We will also continue to take a close look at the economic downturn and its effects around the world - we are particularly interested in finding out how decisions and financial events in one part of the world seem to quickly affect places that would otherwise seem very unconnected.
But if this is your first time finding out about The World Today, let me tell you a little bit more about us.
We are a news and current affairs programme that is broadcast seven days a week through the GMT night and into the GMT morning.
We reach millions of listeners around the world, helping them answer two questions in particular: what has happened overnight and what does the new day bring?
The team see news as a broad canvas - and it is our job to work through the night at Bush House to bring you a variety of stories and voices, telling you what has happened in a lively, engaging and digestible manner.
Highlights of the three World Today editions are also available in the form of World Today Select - a 15 minute audio compilation which can be heard on the Asia Pacific schedule as well as a number of partner stations around the world.
The team also put together the Global News Podcast - a download of the best of World Service news, sent to you twice a day.
You can also listen back to editions of the past seven days of the programme by selecting The World Today on the BBC World Service channel on the BBC iPlayer.
