Turkey excavates suspected mass graves
Turkish authorities have begun excavation work on wells and other sites in southeastern Turkey in search of mass graves allegedly holding bodies of Kurds. Several bones and some cloth have been found and sent for testing to determine whether human remains are present. A local prosecutor ordered the search last month as part of an investigation into allegations that Turkish security forces had killed Kurds in the 1990s. There have been reports that bodies were dumped into wells filled with acids and later sealed. The excavations are to be expanded to more sites on Tuesday.
