U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has announced Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate for the November elections.

Obama released the news on his Web site early today (Saturday) following widespread media speculation that Biden had been tapped for the role of vice president.

Obama said Biden would bring to the ticket his extensive foreign policy experience, and record of collaborating across party lines, as well as having a direct approach to get jobs done.

Biden, who was elected to the Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
