Germany promises to arm Kosovo

Germany has promised to help Kosovo establish a security force. German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung made the pledge during a visit to the newly independent country's capital, Pristina. Following a meeting with President Fatmir Sejdiu, Jung said Berlin was prepared to contribute seven million euros towards the training and equipment of security forces. He also told reporters that Germany opposed the idea of partitioning Kosovo. Serbia has suggested splitting off part of northern Kosovo, where most of the territory's 40,000 ethnic Serbs live. 51 countries have recognised Kosovo since it declared independence from Serbia in February.
