France faces massive strikes
Protests are intensifying in France against President Nicolas Sarkozy's policies of economic reform. Huge numbers of civil servants and students are expected to join striking transport workers as France enters a second week of industrial action. Postal workers, teachers, air traffic controllers and hospital staff around the country are preparing to protest against planned pay and job cuts. As a strike by railway workers over pension reforms enters its seventh day, the main French energy union, the CGT, has also called a 24-hour strike. Students are continuing their protests as well, with more than 20 of France's 85 universities blocked by protesters. The strikes are thought to be costing the country between 300 and 400 million euros a day.
