US and Russian military leaders meet in Finland

Top military leaders from the United States and Russia have met for the first time since this summer's 5-day war between Russia and US-ally, Georgia. The meeting, attended by the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen and his Russian counterpart, General Nikolai Makarov, was held in the Finnish capital Helsinki. An embassy source said they discussed the security environment in Georgia, the future of the NATO alliance, and the US missile defence plans in Europe. Relations between the US and Russia have been tense ever since Moscow recognised the independence of the rebel Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
