Greek-US talks on hard issues John metaxas.com

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met yesterday in Washington for talks that touched on Ankara’s provocative behavior in the Aegean and the intransigence of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in a dispute with Greece over the Balkan country’s official name.

Bakoyannis described the talks as “exceptionally constructive and useful.”

Sources told Kathimerini that Rice indirectly admonished Greece for its signing of a pipeline deal with Russia and Bulgaria, saying the transport of oil through Europe was “an issue of common interest for the USA and Greece.”

Bakoyannis referred to a complaint by Turkey which led to NATO canceling its participation in a planned military exercise earlier this month. Ankara had objected to the drill, calling for the northeastern Aegean island of Aghios Efstratios to be classified as a demilitarized zone.

The two diplomats also discussed a final status for Kosovo, with Bakoyannis insisting that more time was needed for a viable solution to be reached. lornion.blogspot.com
